Grottes et Chauves-souris au Brésil

Bats and Caves in Brazil

Different stamps make up this interesting postage below, all related to the same thematic of the caves and bats !
Thank you very much Marcelo for this beautiful registered letter mailed on December 8, 2010 from São Paulo :-)
The souvenir sheet (R$ 2.68) at the top, issued in 1996 (what day exactly ?), evokes the Brazilian caves in general as national heritage. I don't know if this sheet is featuring a cave from Brazil in particular and which bat species is depicted in the bottom margin ?
I'd already mentioned in a previous post the two identical stamps at the bottom on this cover (with FDC cancellation of June 14, 2010) paying tribute to the Danish palaeontologist Peter Lund, with the cave of Lagoa Santa, where he made his research works in the 19th century, in the background.

For its last stamp series in 2010, the Brazilian Post has issued (on October, 30) a rather original set !
This series of four self-adhesive stamps (R$ 2.00 each), with a very special bat-shape (is it a world first ?), devoted to different species of bats living in Brazil, is also including on the letter above with FDC postmarks from São Paulo.
The Brazilian Post has chosen four species of bats ("Morcegos" in Portuguese) among the 167 species living in the country (more than 1,100 bat species listed in the world).
The species Lonchophylla dekeyseri, typical of the Cerrado region, is one of the five species of threatened with extinction bats, listed on the Red Book of Brazilian Fauna...
The three other species featured above, Artibeus gnomus, Platyrrhinus helleri and Lonchorhina aurita, all living in Brazil but also in other countries of Central and South America, are not endangered.

I've also already mentioned on this blog the very nice set of six stamps, issued on April 21, 2010, designed by plastic artist Julia dos Santos Baptista, devoted to the 50th anniversary of the founding of Brasilia, the federal capital of Brazil.
Another souvenir sheet of two stamps (designed by Miriam Guimarães), issued on May 13, 2010, was also part of this series entitled "Brasilia - Dream and Reality".
Various philatelic by-products linked to this series were also issued by the Brazilian Post, like the illustrated envelope above evoking the Catetinho (the residence of President Juscelino Kubitschek during the construction of Brasilia), the Memorial JK and the Statue "Dois Candangos no Cerrado" to the left...
To note the significant right shift of the lower part of the mechanical cancellation of December 8, 2010 above !!

Marcelo was kind enough to include in his letter the three maxicards above and below made up from three stamps part of the series issued on April 21, 2010 :)
The FDC cancellation (featuring the Memorial JK) issued in Brasilia was applied on these three cards.
The National Congress of Brazil, a major work by Oscar Niemeyer, is featured above with the buildings of the Chamber of Deputies and Federal Senate (the two central towers housing administrative services).

Another famous building of the Brazilian capital, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida, another emblematic work by Oscar Niemeyer, is evoked above.

The Memorial JK, unveiled in 1981, honoring the founding President of Brasilia, Juscelino Kubitschek, is featured on the stamp and the 3rd nice maxicard above.
