The French Post has chosen to return to Classics of painting to design its booklet "Meilleurs Voeux" ("Best Wishes") on general sale on November 7, 2011, devoted to scenes of the Nativity.
The 12 self-adhesive stamps of this booklet were issued in preview sale on November 3, 2011 during the 65th "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" held recently in Paris.
The art works reproduced here dating from different periods, all kept in French museums, constitute the entire work or a detail of the work when its theme is not the Nativity.

Two stamps being part of this booklet appear on the FDC souvenir above with an interesting postmark designed by Sylvie Patte & Tanguy Besset (who have also designed the booklet).
The stamp to the left is reproducing an oil on wood painting "Adoration of the Shepherds" (1420) by the Flemish painter Robert Campin, known as the "Master of Flémalle" (c. 1375-1444), kept at the Fine Arts Museum of Dijon.
The other work, kept in the Louvre Museum, is the central part of an altarpiece painted for the church of Santa Margherita in Prato dating from the 15th century. Its author is anonymous (Master of the Nativity of the Louvre) and could be the Italian painter of the Florentine school Fra Diamante...

Another stamp part of that booklet is included on the letter above.
Thank you very much Éric :-)

A part of the work entitled "The Newborn Christ" by the French painter Georges de La Tour (1593-1652), is reproduced on this stamp.
This oil on canvas, painted between 1645 and 1648, is kept today in the Fine Arts Museum of Rennes.
To note that this painting is the only work of this booklet that has already been reproduced in the past on a French stamp, issued in 1966 (a stamp engraved by Claude Durrens).

The French Post has also issued the same day, a stamp souvenir including the sheet above with that same stamp "The Newborn Christ" by Georges de La Tour.
I took the opportunity to put the FDC postmark also on this sheet, very successful in my opinion :-)
This stamp and the margins of this sheet are indeed well enhancing the work of this French master (Lorraine School) of chiaroscuro...

Here is above the "First Day of Issue" invitation devoted to this booklet, evoking also a part of this work by Georges de La Tour.

On the other side of this invitation above, you can view the entire booklet (print run : 4.7 million), consisting only of two parts, which is rather unusual...
Some would say that the small size of these stamps does not specifically enhance these different paintings, which is not completely wrong !
These 12 stamps (letter up to 20g to France, Monaco and Andorra) reproduce works by other great Flemish, Italian, Spanish, German and French masters.

Another stamp being part of this booklet appears on the nice letter above, mailed on November 15, 2011 from the "Carré d'Encre" in Paris (also including two FDC cancellations). Thank you very much Roland :-)
This stamp reproduces a part of an oil painting dating from the 17th century entitled "The Adoration of the Shepherds", painted by Mathias Stomer (circa 1600 - circa 1652), kept at the Fine Arts Museum of Nantes.
Stomer (or Stom), painter of the Dutch Golden Age (Utrecht School), was strongly influenced by the Baroque painting of Caravaggio.
