JO de Londres sur timbre belge

London Olympic Games on stamp from Belgium

A big thank you Jacques for allowing me to write on this blog about the first stamp devoted to the upcoming Olympic Games in London (hoping to receive many others !).
This stamp issued by the Belgian Post on May 21, 2012 (preview sale on May 19, 2012 in Lier), appears on the cover below mailed from Brussels on May 25, 2012.
This stamp, designed by Els Vandevyvere, has been issued in sheet of five stamps including a "World 1st level" permanent rate, i.e. currently € 1.19.
For the first time, the Belgian Post has combined two printing techniques for that stamp, offset and digital, a process that intensified colors, with a special varnish and a microtext ("Stamps Production Belgium 2012") that can't be reproduced, located under the Olympic rings...

A special varnish was also applied in the margin of that sheet of five stamps, in particular on a red London bus and on the Big Ben.
This stamp features a handover between two athletes, probably a symbol of one of the greatest chance of medals in London with the Belgian 4x400m relay (with brothers Borlée).
Four other disciplines are depicted in the background on this stamp : riding, field hockey (the two men and women Belgian teams are qualified !), cycling and table tennis (?).
The Belgian delegation in London should be composed of 100 to 120 athletes (a record !) competing in about fifteen disciplines (athletics, rowing, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, field hockey, judo, kayaking, swimming, riding, table tennis, shooting, triathlon, sailing).
Belgium will try to do better than in Beijing in 2008 with only two medals (1 gold, 1 silver) won in athletics...
