L'administration postale du Sri Lanka a eu la bonne idée d'émettre, le 23 juillet 2012, une série de 4 timbres consacrés aux jeux olympiques de Londres, représentant les 4 disciplines sportives dans lesquelles les 7 athlètes du pays ont concouru : l'athlétisme, le natation, le tir et le badminton.
Ces 4 timbres (tirage : 500000 chacun), conçus par Pulasthi Ediriweera, ont également été émis dans le bloc-feuillet figurant sur la jolie lettre ci-dessous postée le 6 septembre 2012 de la ville de Piliyandala (située près de la capitale, Colombo). Merci beaucoup Gayanth :-)
The postal administration of Sri Lanka had the good idea of issuing, on July 23, 2012, a series of four stamps dedicated to the London Olympic Games, depicting the four sports in which the seven country's athletes competed : athletics, swimming, shooting and badminton.
These four stamps (print run : 500,000 each), designed by Pulasthi Ediriweera, have been also issued in the souvenir sheet appearing on the nice cover below mailed on September 6th 2012 from the town of Piliyandala (situated near the capital Colombo). Thank you very much Gayanth :-)
Les anneaux olympiques ainsi que le logo de ces jeux de Londres sont inclus dans la marge à gauche et sur chaque timbre (avec également le célèbre Big Ben). A noter aussi la présence d'un autre monument emblématique de la capitale britannique à gauche, le Tower Bridge.
L'emblème du comité olympique srilankais (qui célèbre le 75ème anniversaire de sa création cette année) figure également dans la marge en haut. Cet emblème reprend le lion d'or (également présent sur le drapeau du pays), tenant une épée dans sa patte avant droit, symbole de la force et de la bravoure du peuple srilankais.
Aucune médaille olympique n'a été remportée par la délégation du Sri Lanka à Londres 2012. Le pays n'a remporté que deux médailles d'argent en athlétisme (en 1948 et 2000) depuis sa 1ère participation aux jeux olympiques de 1948... à Londres.
Olympic rings as well as the logo of these London Olympics are included in the left margin and on each stamp (with also the famous Big Ben). To note also the presence of another landmark of the British capital to the left, Tower Bridge.
The emblem of the Sri Lankan Olympic Committee (celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding this year) is also included in the top margin. This emblem features the Gold Lion (also found on the flag of the country), holding a sword in its right fore paw, symbol of the strength and braveness of the Sri Lankan nation.
No Olympic medal has been won by the delegation of Sri Lanka in London 2012. The country has only won two silver medals in athletics (1948 and 2000) since its first participation at the Olympic Games in 1948... in London.
