Emission commune France/Suède - Le Bal masqué

France/Sweden joint stamp issue - The Masked Ball

During the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" held in early November 2012 in Paris, the French Post has issued a joint souvenir sheet with the Swedish Post.
This sheet, issued in preview sale on November 9, 2012, appears on the first day cover below with an interesting postmark, designed by Bruno Ghiringhelli, evoking the theme of this issue, the Masked Ball.
Composed of two stamps (€ 0.60 and € 0.77), this souvenir sheet (print run : 1.6 million) was printed in offset and intaglio from a design by Gustav Martensson and an engraving by Lars Sjööblom.

The background of this sheet shows the main staircase of the Opera Garnier in Paris while the two stamps depict a portrait (c. 1825) of French composer Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) as well as a character of his opera "Gustave III or The Masked Ball" composed in 1833.
This last stamp features the dancer Olof Westring (Royal Swedish Ballet) during a performance of this opera in Stockholm in 2008.
This is probably one of Auber's most famous works, maybe with "La Muette de Portici" (1828), inspired by the tragic death of King Gustav III of Sweden.
Created with the librettist Eugène Scribe, this opera (almost 300 extras !) is indeed devoted to the death of King Gustav III in 1792 a few days after being fatally injured during a masked ball held at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm.
King Gustav III was a Francophile and a supporter of the return of the monarchy in France after the revolution of 1789.
To note that this souvenir sheet is the second joint issue with Sweden after a booklet (6 stamps) issued in 1994 devoted to the cultural relations between the two countries.
