Emission commune Autriche-Thaïlande

Austria-Thailand joint s/s issue

For the first time in their history, Austria and Thailand have issued a series of joint stamps in an interesting souvenir sheet dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the meeting in Vienna between the emperor Franz Joseph I and king Rama V.
It is the Austrian version of that sheet that was used on the cover below mailed from Vienna on January 21, 2013. Thank you very much Edna :-)
That sheet, designed by Silvia Moucka (pritn run : 170,000), issued on November 10, 2012, is composed of two stamps respectively reproducing photographs of King Rama V of Siam (€ 1.70) and Franz Joseph I of Austria (€ 0.70).

King Rama V or Chulalongkorn, who reigned on the Kingdom of Siam from 1868 to 1910, is known to have highly modernized his country and for having introduced important social (abolition of slavery in 1895...), educational and economic measures to his people, explaining why he was so beloved in his lifetime and why he is still today the subject of a cult for many Thai.
Rama V also opened his country to the world by doing for the first time several trips abroad, in particular in Europe on two occasions in 1897 and 1907.
It was during his first voyage in 1897 that Rama V visited several countries including France, Russia, Italy, United Kingdom, Switzerland or Austria.
The trident featured in the central margin on this souvenir sheet seems to be the gift that Rama V gave to Franz Joseph I during his visit to Vienna. In return, the Austrian Emperor offered the king a photograph of himself as well as a white Lipizzaner horse called "Siglavy Batavia"...
Finally, to note that the Swiss Post and the Thailand Post had already issued in 1997 some stamps about this historic visit of the King of Siam in Europe.
