Depuis la fin du 18ème siècle, la ville alsacienne de Rixheim (Haut-Rhin), près de Mulhouse, s'est spécialisée dans la fabrication de papiers peints panoramiques.
Une manufacture de papiers peints y voit en effet le jour lorsque l'industriel mulhousien Hartmann Risler et son associé Jean Zuber s'installent en 1802 dans le bâtiment de l'ancienne Commanderie de l'ordre teutonique, construite en 1735.
C'est dans cet édifice que sont créés ces célèbres décors panoramiques qui ont fait la renommée de l'entreprise "Jean Zuber & Cie" dans le monde entier. Le bâtiment sert alors à la fois d'atelier de fabrication et de maison d'habitation pour la famille Zuber.
Since the late 18th century, the Alsatian town of Rixheim (Haut-Rhin), near Mulhouse, is specialized in the manufacture of panoramic wallpapers.
A wallpapers factory was indeed founded there when the industrial Hartmann Risler and his partner Jean Zuber settled in 1802 in the building of the former Commandery of the Teutonic Order, built in 1735.
It is in this building that these famous panoramic sceneries are created and made the reputation of the company "Jean Zuber & Cie" in the world. The building was then used both as a fabrication shop and dwelling for the Zuber family.
C'est cette Commanderie qui est représentée (gravée par Claude Jumelet) à gauche sur ce splendide timbre (0,63€) émis le 6 mai 2013.

Cette oblitération montre une partie du centre-ville de Rixheim avec en particulier l'église Saint-Léger et le bâtiment (16ème siècle) de l'ancienne mairie à droite.
La partie à droite de ce timbre (imprimée en offset) reproduit un des ces fameux papiers peints panoramiques, créé en 1807 par P.A. Mongin (composé de 20 lés), intitulé "L'Hindoustan", une vision occidentale des Indes typique du 19ème siècle.
Ce papier peint a été en particulier utilisé pour le décor de la salle à manger de la préfecture des Vosges à Épinal...
Pour être complet, la Commanderie abrite également la mairie de Rixheim depuis 1986, ainsi que le musée du papier peint et la manufacture des papiers peints.

This cancellation shows a part of the town center of Rixheim with in particuler the Saint-Léger Church and the old town hall building (16th century) on the right.
The right side of that stamp (offset printed) reproduces one of these famous panoramic wallpapers, created in 1807 by P.A. Mongin (consisting of 20 strips), entitled "Hindustan", a typical Western view of India from the 19th century.
This wallpaper has been used in particular to decorate the dining room of the Prefecture of Vosges in Epinal...
To be exhaustive, the Commandery also houses the town hall of Rixheim since 1986, as well as the Wallpaper Museum and manufacture.
