100 ans de la route La Seu d'Urgell-Andorre

100 Years of the La Seu d'Urgell-Andorra road

Merci beaucoup Olivier :-)
On February 21, 2013, the Spanish Post in Andorra has issued a stamp (€ 0,75) commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the road connecting the Principality to the neighboring Catalan town of La Seu d'Urgell.
In the early 20th century, the Principality of Andorra started to modernize and, in order to break its isolation, the first paved road linking Andorra to Spain was inaugurated in 1913. A second road, towards France, was built in 1933.
It is that stamp that was used to frank this interesting letter below mailed on May 10, 2013 from the Parish of Escaldes-Engordeny (south-east of the country). Thank you very much Olivier :-)

On this stamp (print run : 100,000), designed from a photograph of that time being part of the Guillem de Plandolit Fund of the archives of the Catalan region of Alt Urgell (the city of La Seu d'Urgell is part of this region), you can see a motor vehicle on this road the day of the inauguration.
It seems that the members of Andorran Parliament (General Council), wearing their traditional black suit, were present on each side of the road...
La Seu d'Urgell is the seat of the diocese of Urgell, whose bishop is one of the two co-princes of Andorra (since 1278), the other being the President of the French Republic.
