Nouveau timbre de France : Saintes

On June 17, 2013, the French Post issued a beautiful engraved stamp dedicated to the city of Saintes (Department of Charente-Maritime), former capital of Saintonge, rich of a heritage of over 2000 years.
Saintes, located on the Charente river, is indeed a tourist town with a large Gallo-Roman, medieval and classical heritage : Roman Amphitheatre, thermae of St. Saloine, Basilica of St. Eutropius, Cathedral of St. Peter...
But it is an other landmark of this city that was chosen to illustrate that stamp : the Abbaye-aux-Dames.
It is that stamp (€ 0.63, print run : 1.5 million), created and engraved by Marie-Noëlle Goffin, that appears on the first day cover from Paris below. Thank you very much Joël :-)

The preview sale took also place in Saintes on 14 and 15 June 2013, with the same FDC postmark also designed by Marie-Noëlle Goffin.
This building is a former Benedictine abbey (Romanesque), whose construction began in the 11th century. It was then the first abbey for women in Saintonge and a place of education for the girls of the nobility.
During the French Revolution, the abbey was converted into a prison. Today a historical monument, an important classical music festival is organized here every year.
To note, at the bottom left on this stamp, a detail of the second arch of the central portal featuring a winged ox (symbol of St. Luke).
