Carte postale du Taj Mahal (Agra)

Taj Mahal (Agra) postcard

A big thank you Terence for this nice postcard mailed on December 16, 2013 from the Indian city of Agra located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous :-)
This city of Agra is famous for its many monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage such as the Taj Mahal appearing on the cachet of the Philatelic Bureau applied on this card at the bottom left.
Terence chose two identical stamps (Rs. 5.00, design : Kamleshwar Singh, printn run : 510,000) at the top right, issued on April 12, 2013, devoted to postal heritage buildings of India, to the Agra Head Post Office here.

That stamp, also issued in a souvenir sheet, is part of a set of two stamps issued on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of post offices, the Agra's one here and the Mumbai GPO.
This Agra head post office is characterized by its two beautiful porches on both side and its dome in the middle of the building.
The other stamp above to the left (Rs. 5.00, design : Vinita Sinha, print run : 320,000) issued on September 24, 2013, pays tribute to a major figure of Hindi literature, Pratap Narayan Mishra (1856-1894). Mishra spent his childhood in the city of Kanpur located in that same state of Uttar Pradesh.
Mishra has translated many Bengali works in Hindi and was one of the founders of the journal "Brahmin" in 1883 defending freedom, national unity against the atrocities of the British rule, as well as the newspaper "Hindustan".

Here is above the other side of this postcard with a beautiful view of Taj Mahal ("Crown Palace"), arguably the most famous Indian monument in the world.
This jewel of Mughal architecture (end of construction in 1648) is a white marble mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631.
This monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
