10 ans dans l'UE pour la Pologne

10 years in the EU for Poland

With Malta and Lithuania, it seems that only Poland has also issued a stamp in 2014 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of country's accession to the European Union...
As a reminder, on May 1, 2004, the fifth enlargement of the EU had concerned 10 countries (nearly 75 million inhabitants) : 3 former Soviet republics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), four Central European countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia), 1 former Yugoslav Republic (Slovenia) and two Mediterranean islands (Cyprus and Malta).
The stamp issued on May 1, 2014 by the Polish Post, designed by Magdalena Błażków, is featuring the European flag, with 9 out of 12 stars as well as a paper airplane flying with the colors of the Polish flag.

It is that stamp that was used on the cover above sent on May 6, 2014 from the city of Tarnobrzeg. Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)
This enlargement of the EU (25 member countries) was sometimes decried by some or considered as historic because it allowed the reunification of the European people, divided for half a century by the Iron Curtain and the Cold War...
To join the EU, these 10 countries had to comply with the principles of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms but also to fulfil economic and political conditions (to have a working market economy or to adopt the common rules, standards and policies which make up the body of EU law...).
Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro could be the next countries to join the EU in the coming years.
