200 ans de présence allemande en Moldavie

The eastern part of the Principality of Moldavia was conquered by the troops of the Russian Tsar Alexander I during the Russo-Turkish War between 1806 and 1812. He created there the smallest governorate of the Russian Empire at the time called Bessarabia (70 % of this territory belongs today to the Republic of Moldova and 30% to Ukraine).
The nomadic Tatars minority were then banned or voluntarily migrated from southern Bessarabia (called Boudjak), leaving theis region almost deserted.
Russia then began to entice foreign settlers to repopulate this area and re-run farms in particular.
Czar delivered a manifesto in 1813 in which he promised the German settlers the following privileges : land donation, interest-free credit, exemption from taxes for 10 years, autonomy, freedom of religion and exemption from military service.

Merci beaucoup Nicolae :-)
Thus in 1814 began the influx of German settlers mainly in this southern region of Bessarabia.
Between 1814 and 1842, more than 2,000 families, i.e. about 9,000 people, have thus migrated to Russian Bessarabia, mostly from the southern regions of Germany and the Duchy of Poland. They founded 24 "mother colonies", some farms producing wheat, corn and wine.
Following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed in 1939, Bessarabia was annexed by the Soviets and it was agreed that the Germans who lived there would be resettled in the "Greater German Reich".
This episode put an end to the German presence in Moldova (a minority composed of 93,000 people, about 3% of the population).
On the occasion of an exhibition entitled "German Traces in Moldova from 1814 to 2014, tradition and modernization" held at the National Museum of Arts in Chisinau from 12 May to 10 June 2014, the Post of Moldova issued on May 13, 2014 a special stamp dedicated to these 200 years of German settlement in the country.
It is that stamp (L 1.75), referring to the work on the farm, that you can see on the official FDC above, designed by Vitaliu Pogolsa (print run : 300). Thank you very much Nicolae :-)

Nicolae also used two other stamps on the back of this letter above, in order to reach the postal rate for a land mail shipment to France (L 4.50).
I've already mentioned on this blog these 2 stamps including the one on the right (L 1) that was part of a series of 4 stamps, issued on July 5, 2013, dedicated to exotic butterflies from the collections of the National Museum of ethnography and natural history, the species "Thysania agrippina", one of the largest butterflies in the world, here.
The other stamp (L 1.75), issued on April 5, 2014, is dedicated to Easter.
