Enluminures du Mont Athos

Illuminated manuscripts from Mount Athos

A short post to share with you this interesting registered letter mailed on July 11, 2014 from the city of Chania on the island of Crete, Greece. Thank you very much Spyros :-)
Spyros has again chosen a series of stamps (5) issued by the Autonomous Monastic State of the Mount Athos on September 9, 2013, devoted to decorations of illuminated manuscripts kept in some of the 20 Orthodox monasteries established since the 10th century on this mountainous peninsula of Mount Athos ("Ágion Óros Athos"), located in the northeast of Greece.
As a reminder, these stamps, printed by the Greek Post, can be used throughout the Greek territory.

During the year 2013, three other series were issued on the same theme.
Three of the five stamps above illustrate the Evangelistarion, that is to say, the Holy Gospels according to the authorized version of the New Testament. These illuminations are extracted from manuscripts dating respectively from the 18th, 17th and 16th century, kept in the monasteries of Karakallou (€ 0.40), Simonos Petras (€ 0.78) and Aghios Pavlos (€ 2.50).
The stamp above on the left (€ 0.62) reproduces an illustration from the Book of the Gospels (12th century) of the monastery of Philotheou.
The last stamp in this series (€ 1.00) evokes the Ladder of Divine Ascent, a treatise on the ascetic life and vices to avoid, written by John Climacus (579-649), a Christian monk of the Monastery of St. Catherine at the foot of Mount Sinai, known for his pious life.

Hi Eric,
I love this site of yours as it is friendly for those who can only understand English! It’s great to know new things and historical information about stamps, which is why I love collecting them as well. It was very interesting for me to read this stamp you got from Greece.
If you have some free time, I would like to introduce to you one of my favorite stamp websites, StampWorld.com. I checked out their Catalogue and found all their Europa stamps. Simply go to Advanced Search, and type in the Title/Description: Europa, and you will be shown the list of Europa stamps.

Eric Contesse a dit…

thanks Kevin :)
