Hommage à Charles Péguy en France

Tribute to Charles Péguy in France

On September 5, 1914, the French writer and poet Charles Péguy (1873-1914) was killed by a bullet in the forehead during the fighting in the Battle of the Ourcq, on the eve of the first Battle of the Marne.
Thus disappeared a committed intellectual, socialist activist, anticlerical, weaker defenders, fighting tirelessly against exclusion, anti-Semitism (he was one of the defenders of Dreyfus) and for the respect of the human person.
After a first stamp issued in 1950, the French Post has issued on September 5, 2014 (preview sale), a new stamp dedicated to Charles Péguy to mark the 100th anniversary of his death.
It is that stamp (€ 1.55, print run : 950.000) appearing on the first day cover from Paris below. Thank you very much Joël :-)

That stamp, engraved by Claude Jumelet, was designed from a drawing by Austrian artist Egon Schiele, published in 1914 in the German magazine "Die Aktion" (see below).
The FDC postmark (also available in four other French cities, including Orléans, his hometown), designed by Claude Perchat, was inspired by a photograph of Charles Péguy taken in 1897.
The work of Charles Péguy, very diverse, includes some works such as "The Mystery of the Charity of Joan of Arc" (1910), "The Porch of the Mystery of the second virtue" (1911) and "The Mystery of the Holy Innocents "(1912) showing a mystical inspiration, marking his return to Catholicism.
But Péguy remains famous for his essays expressing social concerns and rejection of modernity, such as "Notre jeunesse" ("Our Youth") (1910) or "L'Argent" ("Money") (1913).
