Le 19 août 2003, le quartier général des Nations Unies à Bagdad en Irak était secoué par un attentat terroriste : 22 représentants des Nations Unies sont décédées lors de cette attaque, dont le représentant spécial du secrétaire général de l'époque (Kofi Annan) en Irak, le brésilien Sergio Vieira de Mello (né en 1948).
Pour rendre hommage à ce haut-fonctionnaire qui aura consacré 34 années de sa vie au service de l'ONU et de certaines de ses agences, la poste brésilienne a émis, le 19 août 2014, un timbre spécial en son honneur.
Ce timbre (2,45 R$, tirage : 450000), conçu à partir d'une photographie de Sergio Vieira de Mello (datant de mai 2003) par Evan Schneider, a été émis dans le cadre des séries UPAEP-AMERICA dont le thème en 2014 était les "personnalités et dirigeants".
On August 19, 2003, the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq were rocked by a terrorist attack : 22 UN officials died, including the Special Representative in Iraq of the UN Secretary General of that time (Kofi Annan), Brazilian Sergio Vieira de Mello (born in 1948).
In order to pay tribute to this senior official who has devoted 34 years of his life in service of the UN and some of its agencies, the Brazilian Post has issued on August 19, 2014, a special stamp in his honor.
This stamp (R$ 2.45, print run : 450,000), designed from a photograph of Sergio Vieira de Mello (dated May 2003) by Evan Schneider, was issued as part of the UPAEP-AMERICA series whose theme in 2014 was the "personalities and leaders".

A noter que ce timbre comporte à la fois le logo UPAEP et l'emblème des Nations Unies.
Pendant sa carrière aux Nations Unies, Sergio Vieira de Mello a occupé différents postes au Haut Commissariat pour les réfugiés, au Haut Commissariat aux droits de l'homme ou en tant que coordinateur de l'aide humanitaire d'urgence.
En 2008, cette tragique journée du 19 août à été choisie par l'assemblée générale des Nations Unies pour devenir la journée mondiale de l'action humanitaire, visant à sensibiliser les populations au travail humanitaire, à la coopération internationale et à rendre hommage aux travailleurs humanitaires dans le monde.

During his career at the United Nations, Sergio Vieira de Mello worked for the High Commissioner for Refugees, the High Commissioner for Human Rights ar as Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
In 2008, this tragic day of August 19th was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly to become the World Day of Humanitarian Action, to raise awareness of the humanitarian work, international cooperation and to honor humanitarian workers of the world.
