After Vienna in 2014 and before Amsterdam in 2016, the French Post has issued on general sale on April 7, 2015, the 14th souvenir sheet of its "European Capitals" series started in 2002, this time devoted to the capital of Latvia, Riga.
I was lucky enough to receive the different First Day Covers from Paris below about the four stamps (€ 0.76 each) of this souvenir sheet. Thank you very much Joël and Roland :-)
Designed by illustrator and cartoonist Guillaume Sorel (born in 1966), this souvenir sheet (print run : 825,000) is dedicated to four emblematic buildings of Riga : St. Peter's Church, the House of the Blackheads, the Nativity of Christ Cathedral and the Latvian National Opera.

The FDC cancellation (designed by Alain Bouldouyre), such as the left margin of this m/s (see below), are also reminding us that we can find in Riga the nicest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe.
Founded in the early 13th century, Riga has a rich and varied architectural heritage, due to the different foreign occupations (Polish, Swedish, Russian...) over the centuries. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.
To note, on the first day cover above, the signature and drawing by Guillaume Sorel to the left, featuring a part of the stamp's design devoted to the Nativity Cathedral, Riga's Orthodox Cathedral, built between 1876 and 1883 in a neo-Byzantine style.

The House of the Blackheads Brotherhood, built in 1334 in Riga, was the seat of a guild of single merchants and travelers whose symbol was an African's head.
This building, destroyed during the 2nd World War and rebuilt in 1999, is still currently one of the most beautiful monuments of Riga.
The facade of the more classical building housing the Latvian National Opera, is depicted on the stamp in the lower right on this m/s. Built in 1863, it houses the opera but also a national ballet, a choir and an orchestra.
The Freedom Monument, representing a woman raising three gold stars, is featured in the margin of the sheet to the right.
Inaugurated in 1935, this memorial was erected in honor of soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920).

The St. Peter's Church (Nordic Gothic style) and its 124 meters high tower, one of the most famous buildings in Riga, is also depicted in the center of this souvenir sheet on this beautiful Riga's night view.
This Evangelical Lutheran church and its tower were redesigned or rebuilt several times over the centuries.
It is that stamp which was also used on the first day cover above, illustrated with the Riga's coat of arms.
